Part Worn Tyres

Here at Dexel, we do not supply part worn tyres to our customers. We do not believe that they deliver the safety, performance or value for money that we strive to give our customers.

Value for Money There is a common misconception that part worn tyres offer great value for money when in fact they actually provide a false economy. As a used product, part worn tyres offer less usable tread than new tyres and this means that the cost per millimetre may end up costing you more. For example, a new tyre with 8mm of tread provides 6.4mm of usable tread before it becomes illegal, whereas a part worn tyre, which will usually come with 3-4mm of tread, will only have between 1.4mm and 2.4mm of useable tread.

Safety

Although there are laws in the UK that govern the sale of part worn tyres, 98%* of those sold are done so illegally, according to TyreSafe, and do not meet the regulations put in place to protect your safety.

Part worn tyres are not internally x-rayed before they are sold and they do not come with a service history, so it is impossible to tell if they have suffered damage by just visually inspecting them. This is a real danger and TyreSafe found that 34%* (over one in three) of part worn tyres sold contain potentially dangerous forms of damage or non-compliance including:

• Illegally repaired punctures
• Exposed structural cords or ply
• Damage to the internal lining from driving on incorrectly inflated tyres
• Internal structural damage caused by impact with static objects
• Tread depth less than 2mm deep all over (the legal minimum tread depth for part worn tyres to be sold)

Performance

As part worn tyres will most likely have been driven on for thousands of miles, they will certainly offer a compromised performance on the road.

At Dexel Tyre & Auto Centre we recommend replacing your tyres once tread drops below 3mm as your gripping capabilities are drastically affected. So, if you purchase a part worn tyre with tread already below these levels, you will face ineffective grip, limited resistance against aquaplaning and longer braking distances.
