Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPMS)

The Current Situation

At present the vast majority of vehicles do not have tyre pressure monitoring systems fitted, but there are certain vehicles that do, such as those fitted with run-on-flat tyres as standard. However this is all going to change as new EU legislation has set out a two phased introduction of T.P.M.S, which started in November 2012. From that date all new models of vehicles will be coming out of the factories with T.P.M.S fitted as

standard, and from November 2014, all vehicles (regardless of whether it is a new model) will have T.P.M.S fitted as standard from the factory.

Why?

T.P.M.S is becoming a legal requirement to be fitted on all new cars for two main reasons. Firstly it will help to reduce road deaths and casualties caused by under inflated tyres. Secondly tyre pressure monitoring systems will help the environment as correctly inflated tyres help a vehicle use less fuel and emit less CO2 emissions.

Recent accident figures released by the Department for Transport (DfT) show illegal, defective and under inflated tyres were responsible for more than 1,210 road casualties in the UK during 2010, while the number of tyre-related deaths on UK roads in the last five years has reached 164.

Research carried out by Michelin Tyre PLC shows the key relationship between tyre pressure and the fuel needed to make a tyre roll. This is known as rolling resistance. They found that tyres under inflated by 15 psi (1 bar) have increased rolling resistance leading to around 6% greater fuel consumption.

What does this mean for me?

Customers with vehicles that have T.P.M.S fitted may notice they will get a warning light appear on their dashboard telling them that there is a problem with their tyre pressure. In most cases this will be due to a drop in tyre pressure of 25%, from the recommended inflation pressure. Assuming there is no damage to the tyre, a free pressure correction at any of our branches is all that is needed.

Alternatively, the warning light may appear if the T.P.M.S sensor has failed. If this is the case, any of our branches can rectify this problem.

We can fit T.P.M.S sensors on all cars, vans and 4x4's at extremely competitive prices

All of our branches carry a comprehensive stock of T.P.M.S sensors, meaning we will always have the right sensor for your vehicle.

Furthermore, we are confident we can save you money on your fitted T.P.M.S sensors against the standard market price.

As long as your T.P.M.S sensor is not in need of replacement we will also service your T.P.M.S every time you have a tyre fitted with us. This will ensure that your sensors will last as long as possible and help to reduce any unnecessary costs.
